The most exciting city in the world, bar none, with more restaurants, bars, museums and iconic sights than virtually any other big city in the world. It’s also – for better or worse – quite unlike the Mean Streets stereotype. New York is safe, welcoming, and makes you feel as if you belong. This is partly due to the logic of design: Manhattan is laid out on a simple grid system so that you always know where you are and can pretty much walk everywhere. But the locals are also surprisingly friendly.
New York is a year-round destination with four distinct seasons. Winter can be magical, with thick snowfalls followed by cloudless skies. Summer has the most reliable weather, although August can be humid. Spring and autumn are the best, with clear blue skies and a crispness to the air, the leaves in Central Park turning a beautiful golden red by October.
There are big-name museums, galleries and architectural landmarks to see, but New York is also surprisingly outdoorsy, with numerous parks, rivers and even beaches, so don’t feel you have to spend all your time indoors. Brooklyn is thriving, and still has the colourful old neighbourhoods (with characters to match), that no longer exist in Manhattan. It’s also surprisingly quick and easy to get out of the city by train or subway, so don’t be afraid to explore.
Eight million people from every country on Earth live in New York, so the range of culinary experiences is bewildering. The fine-dining scene changes amazingly fast, with new trends and movements springing up all the time.
New York never sleeps, so there’s no shortage of nightspots to stay awake in, but which one to chose? Current cocktail bar trends are for retro, remade Art Deco spaces, although tiki lounges serving fruity umbrella drinks are also popping up. Of course there are still timeless hotel bars, classic taverns, and sleek nightclubs for all tastes in New York.
An unstoppable flow of rushing water surges over the arcing fault in the riverbed with thunderous force. Great plumes of icy mist rise for hundreds of meters as the waters collide, like an ethereal veil concealing the vast rift behind the torrent. Thousands of onlookers delight in the spectacle every day, drawn by the force of the current and the hypnotic mist.
The waterfalls are the main attraction here, and there's a range of ways to see them: from their foot on the legendary Maid of the Mist boat tours; from behind in caves accessible by elevator; from the sky hovering in helicopters; or gazing from observation towers.
Get on board the Maid of the Mist for an exciting half-hour cruise past the base of the American Falls and onward into the basin of the magnificent Canadian Horseshoe Falls. In operation since 1846, and the oldest tourist attraction in North America, the Maid of the Mist operates from about late April to mid-October every year, depending on the weather.
