Rome & Naples City Break

ROME

During a City Break holiday, many people spend their time focusing on the main sites between Palatine Hill and the Spanish Steps. Start off with a bang by visiting the Roman Colosseum and marvel at Rome’s greatest architectural wonder.

After the Colosseum, wander up Palatine Hill, the birthplace of Rome, for a panoramic view of the Roman Forum and central Rome. Next, explore the Roman Forum yourself and make your way on to nearby Capitoline Hill. Here you will find the glorious Piazza del Campidoglio designed by Michelangelo and the Capitoline Museums. But save those for later. For now just enjoy the view and wait for your stomach to rumble. You can find quick eats in the neighborhoods behind Capitoline Hill around the Piazza Venezia.

After lunch, ogle at the immense, wedding cake-like Monument to Victor Emmanuel II as you make your way up the Via del Corso. Along the Corso, detour down the well-trod side streets to the Pantheon at Piazza de la Rotonda, and then double back to reach the world famous Trevi Fountain. After you’ve tossed a coin in the fountain and had an ice cream, the streets beyond the Fountain contain Rome’s most chic shopping spots leading all the way up to the Spanish Steps.

As the pace of your holiday slows towards the evening, climb the steps and make your way to Borghese Park for sunset views over the city. As the night dawns, make your way down to Trastevere by bus or the help of the metro. The former ghetto is full of various restaurants and bars that are sure to please every holiday budget and taste, with plenty of entertainment afterwards.

NAPLES

Naples, Napoli in Italian, is the third most-populated city in Italy and the biggest city in Southern Italy. Its name comes from the Greek Neapolis meaning new city. Its close proximity to many interesting sites, such as Pompeii and the Bay of Naples, makes it a good base for a holiday exploring the area. Naples is a lively and vibrant city, full of wonderful historical and artistic treasures and narrow, winding streets with small shops, making it worth at least a few days visit on your city break.

Rome isn’t the only city that’s a honeycomb of ruins below street level – Naples also has trouble building Metro lines! There’s a tour in Naples that’s just about what lies underfoot, called Napoli Sotteranea, which includes ruins from Greek and Roman times and can be worth a stop.

Our favorite glimpse at centuries past is underneath the San Lorenzo Maggiore church where you’ll find the remains of a Roman market. What’s extra cool about the ruins under San Lorenzo are that, unlike the Roman Forum where you have to really use your imagination to picture what the streets and buildings once looked like, the Roman market that’s been excavated under San Lorenzo includes storefronts with walls and ceilings intact. What’s more, you can walk into them to get a peek at the Roman laundry (one basin for washing, another for rinsing) and Roman bakery (the bread oven in the back looks essentially like the pizza ovens in Naples do today).

Take a Day-Trip to Pompeii & Herculaneum

Many people who choose to spend a night or two on holiday in Naples do so only because it’s a great base from which to explore two of Italy’s most popular tourist sights – the ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Either combined into one long day-trip or split into two, this look into ancient Roman life is unforgettable and well worth the effort it takes to get there and back. Pompeii is the most famous of the two archaeological sites, although some say Herculaneum is the more interesting one due to its smaller size and the fact that a greater number of the artifacts remain in situ.
