Jordan is a land steeped in history. It has been home to some of mankind's earliest settlements and villages, and relics of many of the worlds great civilizations can still be seen today.
No holiday to Jordan would be complete without including a visit to Petra, its greatest legacy. Petra, which has been declared one of the New Seven Wonders of the World is an ancient rock-hewn city that never fails to inspire. There are various guided walking tours available around the site that allow you to explore the hundreds of buildings and tombs.
A holiday to Jordan should not miss the opportunity to experience Petra by Candlelight, when the narrow entrance gorge to the Petra site and the Treasury are lit with thousands of candles.
The Roman city of Jerash lies to the North of Amman where you can see the ruins of the anciet city, with its wide colonnaded streets and amphitheatre. In the huge hippodrome there are displays of Roman army drills and battle tactics featuring legionaries in full armour and a re-enactment of a classical chariot race.
As you travel along the King’s Way, stopping at Madaba, from where you can see the famous Byzantine mosaic map of the Holy Land. Our Jordan Guided Tours also include a visit to Mount Nebo, from where Moses is said to have stood and looked onto the Promised Land.
Travelling East of Amman you will find Jordan’s desert castles. These are beautiful examples of early Islamic art and architecture. Displaying fine mosaics and frescoes and in isolated locations, these castles can be visited as a day trip from the capital of Jordan or as part of your escorted guided tour.
Qasr Amra, one of the best preserved Castles in Jordan, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and its interior walls and ceilings are covered with colourful frescoes. Qasr Kharaneh, Qasr Al-Tuba and Qasr Al-Hallabat have also been restored and are all in excellent condition. The black basalt fort of Qasr Al-Azraq has stood since Roman times and was the headquarters of Lawrence of Arabia during the Arab Revolt.
The castle of Qala'at ar-Rabad near Ajlun, is located on the site of an old monastery. It was built by Ezz-ed-din Al-Qassam, a general of Saladin army, in 1184. It was permitted to control the road of Damas and Egypt.
The Dead Sea is a salt lake that lies on the border between the West Bank and Israel to the west, and Jordan to the east. It is said to be the lowest point on Earth, at 420 m (1,378 feet) below sea level; its shores are actually the lowest point on dry land and is regular Jordan holiday spot. At 330m deep (1,083 feet), the Dead Sea is known as the world's saltiest body of water.
With 30 percent salinity, it is 8.6 times saltier than the ocean. The Dead Sea is 67 km (42 miles) long and 18 km (11 miles) wide at its widest point. It lies in the Jordan Rift Valley, and its main tributary is the Jordan River.
The Dead Sea is a popular Jordan Holiday destination and has attracted interest and visitors from around the Mediterranean basin for thousands of years. It was a place of refuge for King David, one of the world's first health resorts (for Herod the Great who also enjoyed holidays here), and it has been the supplier of products as diverse as balms for Egyptian mummification to potash for fertilizers.
The Dead Sea's climate offers year-round sunny skies and dry air with low pollution. It has less than 50mm mean annual rainfall and a summer average temperature between 32 and 39 °C. Winter average temperatures range between 20 and 23 °C. The region has weakened ultraviolet radiation, particularly the UVB (erythrogenic rays), and an atmosphere characterized by a high oxygen content due to the high barometric pressure. The shore is the lowest dry place in the world.
Wadi Rum has been inhabited by many human cultures since prehistoric times, with many cultures — including the Nabateans — leaving their mark in the form of rock paintings, graffiti, and temples. As of 2007, several Bedouin tribes inhabit the area.
In the West, Wadi Rum may be best known for its connection with British officer T.E. Lawrence, who based his operations in Wadi Rum during the Arab Revolt of 1917–18.
The area is now also one of Jordan's important tourist holiday destinations, and attracts an increasing number of foreign tourists. In contrast, local or Arab tourists are almost non-existing. Popular activities in the desert environment include camping holidays under the stars, riding Arab horses, hiking and rock-climbing amongst the massive rock formations. Jabal Rum (1754 metres above sea level) is the highest peak in the area, and the second-highest peak in Jordan. On a clear day, it is possible to see the Red Sea and the Saudi border from the top.

Petra, one of Seven Wonders of the World, is without a doubt Jordan's most valuable treasure and greatest tourist attraction. It is a unique, vast city, carved into the sheer rock face by the Nabataean people, industrious Arabs who settled in Petra more than 2000 years ago, turning it into a significant junction for the silk, spice and other trade routes.
The "Lost City" is another name for Petra, because it became lost to the western world after the 1400’s AD. Four centuries later, however, it was rediscovered in 1812 by the Swiss traveler, Johann Ludwig Burckhardt, who tricked his way into the fiercely guarded site by pretending to be an Arab from India wishing to make a sacrifice at the tomb of the Prophet Aaron. This year, Petra celebrates its 200th anniversary after its rebirth.
Words won’t give Petra justice. It is simply magnificent and breathtaking. The journey starts by entering the city through the Siq, a narrow gorge, over 1km in length, which is flanked on either side by soaring, 80m high cliffs. Just walking through the Siq is an experience in itself. The colors and formations of the rocks are dazzling. As you reach the end of the Siq you will catch your first glimpse of Al-Khazneh (Treasury).
This is an inspiring experience. A massive façade, 30m wide and 43m high, carved out of the sheer, dusky pink rock face and dwarfing everything around it. It was carved in the early 1st century as the tomb of one of the Nabataea kings and represents the engineering genius of these people.
The four stars, Petra Guest House is ideally located at the majestic city of Petra with only few steps away from the entrance. Conclude your journey of exploration and enjoy history and hospitality at the Petra Guest House.
